Timken Taper Roller Bearing Seal Removal

Over greasing destroys more bearings than under greasing, so I would recommend pulling it completely apart and inspecting the bearings for damage.

The seal does not look like it is part of the bearing, the seal on a Timken TRB is flat and the retaining clip is on the underside of the seal, not along the OD like the one you show. I agree with Ulma Doctor that it is probably an off the shelf shaft seal. I’m not familiar with this spindle, is it possible it was added by a previous owner and is causing the grease to build up in the spindle? Normally you only want a small amount of grease in there and a way for the spent thickener to get out before it hardens. A seal there will prevent the old grease from getting out.

I pulled (destroyed) the seal today and UlmaDoc was spot on. Some sort of transmission seal. Incidentally, the drag was the seal on the spindle shaft itself. I ran down to the auto parts store with my calipers in hand and asked for a new seal. The clerk asked what model and I just held up my Mitutoyos and shook my head: “isn’t for a car”.

He reached down behind the desk, pulled out his own calipers and said, “follow me”.

We spent the next 30 minutes measuring seals out back until we found one that was close. A little oversized on the ID - eliminated the drag. A little tight on the OD but the seal was persuaded into its new home. $29!

Anyway no more drag and smooth as silk!

Now - need to replace the motor.
