Source for Quality Metric Bolt Assortment

See if you have a local store that sells bolts by the pound.

I have one 50 minutes nw @ $3.50 lb and 30 minutes sw @ $6 lb. They don't have every single thing I want but they have a lot. I bought every size and length I could in English and Metric in bolts, cap screws, button head, flat head, and shoulder bolts. I probably have 500 lbs of bolts and they are extremely organized. I still have a ways to go before I'll be content.

I need to work on button head and flat head in 8, 10, 12, 14mm. I can't get all I need local.
Hemly Tool in Montville, Ohio is an interesting source up your way if you haven't heard of them. (and maybe that is one that you mean) I think they ship nowadays, originally was pick up in person only. I really had to avoid going home that route on paydays !

Hemlys hardware is in Thompson now. Great resource but they haven't bought any new stuff in a while. That is one. The other is Pine Valley near Middlefield.

I've looked at metric bolt assortments from several vendors and am making an order within the next week or so. It seems most vendors stock both "flange" bolts, and regular "hex head" bolts. There doesn't seem to be much difference in price. A question for those of you use metrics on a regular basis. Which style do you use most often, and why?

I only use flange bolts (metric or Imperial) for clamping purposes to better spread the load, particularly if I'm using an over-size (& thick) washer. Normally, I prefer SHCS, either regular if I need high torque or button head otherwise (regular heads have deeper sockets so less chance of the Allen key from slipping.

My small selection of metric hex bolts were purchased for specific uses where I needed to access the bolt from the side. My Imperial bolts are mostly hex above 1/4-20 and SHCS below 1/4-20, but my 1/4-20's are probably a 50/50 mix.

That said, it depends what you're going to be using the bolts for - if you're trying to match the appearance of a full-scale bolt, then use what matches.
