I fully realized yesterday that if:
- the 10-32 x 3/8" SCHS (40510) that attaches the lead screw support (40370) to the cast base (44010) is removed, and
- there is no engagement lever (15420) or it is removed,
then the cast base ought to only touch the V of the bed (44120). The horizontal, vertical, or cylindrical surfaces of the cast base ought not touch anything in the joint between the cast base, and the bed and lead screw support.
I checked my lathe by shining a light through the joint between the bed, lead screw support, and cast base. Light didn't pass through at the rear corner of the joint. I removed the cast base, and inspected it. I found thick paint in the rear corner. I removed most of the paint in and near the corner by scraping using the unground end of a 3/8-inch HSS turning tool. When I reassembled the lathe, minus the 10-32 SCHS, light passed through everywhere it ought to pass.
