ROTEX RM-1 Rebuild (kind of)

The gear is keyed and has a set screw but, I can't move it closer to the casting to eliminate the slack. It goes where it goes. Must align with the other gear.

Arrow in the pic points to where I was thinking of adding shims.

Am I trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist?

Never mind. I figured it out without the help of Captain obvious. The set screw kept walking the shaft out as I tightened it. A little clean up with a file on the shaft and I eliminated the .025" end play.

Someone in the past installed a super long slotted screw to hold a small chip shield inside the knee casting. I needed 3 hands to put it together using that screw. I found a proper length hex head bolt and assembly went smooth and I didn't have a freaky long screw hanging out the side. It's the little stuff that seems to cause delays. Just like me not knowing why I had endplay at the gear.

I decided to try to clean the small parts and hardware in my reloading tumbler with SS pins. Doesn't tear up my brass so I went for it. Worked great.

I'm still trying to clean old paint off some of the parts. Making progress at least. Starting to look like a mill again.

Still stripping old paint and cleaning parts. Here's where I'm at today. It's nice and smooooooth.

The horizontal shaft is just mocked up for now. It was dinged up in the past so I chucked it up in my lathe to knock down the dings and polish it up a bit. I need to clean up the ID as well.

Hopefully I'll get it lubed and the bearings adjusted tomorrow. I can't forget to install the pulley and belt before feeding the shaft through.

The ONLY thing missing/broken is the table lock lever. It's the wrong one and modified to fit and then apparently had the lever broken off. I'll have to make one.

Sorry for cluttered background and cell phone pics. My daughter STILL has my camera. You can see the blue truck off to the side. I'm in the middle of a rock crawler build and I actually need the space I'm using for this mill to continue on the truck.

Stoning the dingle-berries off the table and ways is a time honored technique!

Dont worry about the slop in the knee lift. Gravity is in your favor here ;-)

Damn, but you are fast! Super nice work too!!!

I am TIRED of cleaning parts.

Just for reference, the horizontal shaft bearings are Timken 24780. I couldn't see a number on the race and wasn't going to knock them out to look further.

The needle bearing in the overarm support is a Torrington B-1012.
