POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

BIG thank you to @RandyM for his tip on using a paint roller to apply oil based enamel to machines. Brushing it on just wasn't working out, brush strokes galore. Improved somewhat with a better quality brush but the mini paint roller was the bomb and sped up the painting 10x.

Sanding a table for the third time with my "dustless" orbital sander . I can't imagine how much dust would be created with a " non dustless " model . Daughter wants it darker but I'm not sure I can get it darker , maybe a dark tablecloth would work . :dunno:
Yes apparently you need to connect a 5hp dust collector to the dustless orbital sanders.

Machine painters at Hershey always used small, short nap rollers

Use dye stains, come in water soluble & other solvents. (stay away from the water soluble ones because they raise the wood fibers too much.)
The dye penetrates the wood and is almost impossible to remove so words of warning!
Dyes can be mixed with clear finishes to produce translucent surfaces. Make sure your spray gun and abilities are on top of the game or it will turn out blotchy. Dyes can also be used to blend different shades of the lumber to make it look more uniform. Risk here is that as the wood ages or is exposed to UV that perfect blend will change!
Solution: accept the beauty of natural wood, clear finish it for protection.
Experience here making all of the mistakes!

The stain is Hickory Minwax gel . I haven't a clue of where it came from , but it sucks . I've never had this gel stuff so it must have come from the woodshop I bought out years ago . FWIW , the table did get a little darker and will have to do .

I don't know if Stain Base is available at retail or not. We got in in drums from Sherwin Williams. They also sell dyes and super fine ground pigment. for tinting.

Temporary hose clamp has been replaced with the tank strap. I ended up slicing, overlapping and welding the straps back together for them to fit my tank so it took an extra day for the paint to dry.

A few years back i won a 14 x 18 x1.5" polishing plate in the case shown from an auction. I welded ears on the plate and bolted my mill to it to give it a bit more gravity. I put the arc welding lead and manuals in the case and stuffed it behind the tank to free up a touch more drawer space. It's captive in there so you do have to loosen the tank clamp to slide it out.

Played with the plasma cutter and sliced off the end of a small air tank and built a grinder stand out of it. Did some more cleaning and organizing of metal stock.
