POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

I know you are not making NASA parts, but the problem with making a live center is runout. These are usually very precise and ground. If you have any runout, the tailstock end of the part will not be round. Just keep this in mind if you are turning a shaft that needs to fit in a bushing or such. You may prefer to use a dead center if the runout exceeds your tolerance. Dead centers should have zero runout.
I have a Shars live center which seems to have about .0004" of runout. I am considering upgrading so I can more accurately turn shafts. The high end live centers must be made of platinum if you look at the prices!
Hey, is there a way you can measure the TIR for us just for academic interest?
I looked up the runout on a Royal and it is guaranteed to be less than .00005". List price is about $1K.

Yeah I get it. Its not for cutting tho. I made it in brass for sanding bbl journals to size for press fit pieces. ;)

Got the itch to work on an actual project.
Decided to start on an extended chuck key with some round bar I had. Lathe is out of commission so had to be a mill only project. 3/4” round bar milled to .460. Then chamfer milled. I hand filed the sharp corners.

So far

So, (no pictures, sorry) had a friend brought his manual transmission case over this weekend, he had a bolt broke off in the aluminum housing which is 19" tall. I used the mill to remove the bolt without damaging the case, the 22" table clearance on my PM-940 was sweet and allowed me to get over the edge of the case with enough reach to work down inside the housing. This isn't the first time the large work envelope has been very useful but it is the first time I thought about posting about it to make the point we have discussed soooooo many times, go as big as you can afford, buy once cry once.

Pistons just don't look cool, unless you put some valve relief pockets in them...

I had a big block once where we had increased the rod length to decrease the rod angularity and Venolia made a set of custom pistons with buttons machined to cover the rist pin holes with ring groves so the rings would have support and seal.
