POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

You chose wisely.. (I couldn't resist)

But really probably not that wise. you could do the mounting at night, but the trimming requires a nice day and daylight... But I would have probably done the same ... it's all dependent on what I want to do.

I will do the trimming after work tomorrow. It will only take a few hours. 10 minutes to prune and 2 hours to cut up small enough to fit in my 2 green barrels.

It was nice to spend the day out in the shop. Got them both mounted. I plunked a hole through the table for long parts too.

Cutting oil is my blood.

Today I made these.
They're not pretty and don't look too close. They were made from the softest aluminum known to man, it seems.
If I so much as looked at the metal they started to mushroom.

But, it's not the actual item that was important. I needed a 14X14 spacer with a 8mm hole to mount some tie downs onto my motorcycle. The original hole is recessed for a metric socket cap screw,

Here's what it was spacing

And here's the final result.

So you know those guys who can make seemingly anything without having to draw it up. Just look at some steel, cut it up, do some welding, and it works? My Dad has always been clever like that. So, I'm trying to practice doing that also. You know the projects, where you use that primal instinctive part of the brain. Where reflex is more important than thought. That's what this is, an instinctive build. No tape measures were used, just a piece of cardboard and marker to trace out sizes.

What it's for is to temporarily attach a winch on a 2" hitch to the trailer without having to drill any holes.

Done. Just hook it on the edge and it's there. Then it can be moved from place to place as needed

Hopefully this and a small snatch block will help winch that big late I need to pick up on to the trailer.

Next, proceeded on to abuse the poor little band saw. The chinese motor was starting to put off those hot melting chinese electrical smells, but it carried on.

Figuring out how to cut the oddball angles on these angles was a bit fiddly. But in the end it worked out. Didn't even accidentally cut the welding clamp!

Moving trees and brush with the tractor. Well, the brush guard did it's job, saving the grill. But it suffered, so I replaced it yesterday. Simple cut and weld fabrication, no machining.

First picture is the damaged guard, after I'd cut one side free to reuse the end caps.

Here it is mounted on the tractor this morning. The replacement expanded metal is heavier and finer mesh than the old. Should be a bit stronger at the cost of blocking more light from the headlights, which I use rarely.

Need to empty this into buckets... in the process, because I had no filters... I need to filter the fluid as it is pumped out...

Parts Washer.jpeg

Because I have stuff in the other house and stuff here.... I had to MacGyver a temporary solution... One old fish tank pump... some air fittings, some hose fittings... clear tubing (that I had to warm up to make it fit in some of the fittings that were a bit larger)... a water filter housing with sediment filter in it... some buckets.

Lets pump this out.jpeg
This has the great potential of making a frigging mess.... Let the games begin!!!

Oh, wait, how to I control the pump... I do not want this sucker running all the time while I manage the hose in the bucket... There! I knew I had a pedal switch in the garage!

Now with pedal switch - lets pump.jpeg

Okay, now... let the games begin!!!

Bonus points for a video while it's running! Don't do that, we don't want to see you mess up the floors. (That's what would happen to me!) Hope this setup does what you need.
