POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

@NCjeeper - What's that black stuff on the wall behind the lathe?

The little tumbler survived beating this chain to death. Actually, it seems to happily purr along working on this thing.

Unfortunately, it appears the chain flash rusted almost immediately after being rinsed off. I used water, so figured that would happen. These are very very low carbon iron, and really like the 02 floating around! They don't appear to be wrought iron, just some low carbon old iron of some sort.

Anyway, that was the first pass at the process. Need to figure out if there's something I can add to prevent the flash rusting, protect the chain, and not interfere with some TIG or MIT brazing or welding. Was thinking maybe boric acid, borax, or some sodium carbonate or bicarbonate in the rinse/wash water. Or maybe just a rinse in something with a light water soluble oil. (I know one of you may chime in... ;) )

The plan for this, and a few others like it is to become table legs for a slab table. The idea is to make a form and braze the links together to shape four legs for a table. The goal would be to then heat color them brownish purple, and clear coat. I know brass seems to take heat coloring well, but need to verify Al or Si bronze does too. The gold and brown make a nice contrast.

But, I need to see exactly how they braze and figure out how to keep flash rust off of them.

I haven't been slacking. Just been doing other things.
Made these yesterday, they are replacing another design that I was not happy with.
I have 3 reels that hold our INDOOR volleyball lines (we used to have semi perm lines, but due to a XXXXX business admin who doesn't know his xxx from his elbow we had to go to these removable lines) The lines are 60 feet long on each side and 30 across the back. we have 2 courts and are able to use the existing lines for the 2 60s closes to the adjoining areas for those lines.. I made these many, many years ago. About 2 or 3 years ago, I upgraded one of the reels. I just did the remaining 2. They provide tension, and wipe the dust/dirt off the lines so they stay where put (better). The aluminum is turned to 1/4 and a 20 tpi, and flats The spring provides tension. an old shirt provides the wipe.. BTW these reels have ball bearing centers, and a pvc core to start the wrap, with a slot to catch them. They take a beating. But you really can't just bunch them up and untangle them as some of my players think... one did that and it took us 30 minutes to untangle the mess. (oh and there's a friction brake on the hub to prevent it from freewheeling)

Friend has a Massey Ferguson tractor with rear rims that are rotted from leaking calcium. I have a set of duals off an International tractor 14.9-28”. My rims are still like new but they don’t have the six loops to bolt to the center hub. They are the clamp on style.
I made 12 loops up today to weld to the rim after we remove the tires. These will get plug welded on the rim. Not pretty but they should work and cheaper than buying 12 weld on loops for $30 each. The other 11 I chamfered on a 45 degree angle so the center hub slips on easier, but I forgot to take a picture
WARNING For anyone working on any rims, make sure you remove the tires. They will explode,
Martin

So, these are made of some kind of vinyl or something and you just unroll them onto a floor to mark your court? Don’t they get kicked around or move during play, or have I got the wrong idea on how these work? Never seen anything like this — kind of reminds me of Bugs Bunny and that instant rabbit hole he would pop out of his back pocket (man, did I ever want one of those sooo bad…!)

so yea, they get kicked around .. they were sold at a tennis place online.. they use them for training. A friend of mine came up with the idea when I was struggling to figure out a way around the bus/admin . When clean and on a clean floor they will stick pretty good, but once they get kicked around they are more prone to moving. Much better than the alternatives. I tried chalk lines, but the b/a complained about that. tape was forbidden.
