POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Did you flame the anvil base prior to final assembly? It looks great.

You would think that I remember to do that before, right??? Nope... I forgot and had to do it after it was glued and screwed together.... Used the Mapp torch since it was the only one I had here... it was quick...

Regardless of when, really adds to the character.

A lot of the restaurants around here built their furniture out of cheap common grade 2x4 following the recent inflation. Some brands burned in and a propane flame transforms that stuff from Home Depot junk into art worthy of clear coat. It's really a surprising effect!

Haven't wanted to get into anything too complicated given the fatigue from the recent hospital episode, but my left arm is covered with little burn marks from hot chips. Caused some fret when they were trying to draw blood, so it was time to do something. Got the base fairly cheap from allindustrial.com. Cut down the horizontal arm a bit, and turned an adapter to go over the outside of the arm to a 1/4-20 male thread. Made a metal strip with five 1/4-20 female threaded holes, one for the arm, 4 for button head screws to hold the polycarbonate (lexan).

The 6"x9" plastic can be rotated 90 degrees to be horizontal and moved up/down easily. Should work for several situations on the mill too.

Something a little different but I setup and aligned the tool changer for my new lathe in the shop Over the past couple days. Was a bit of a doozy. But I did get it sorted. Works great

Now it’s just time to ship the mill spindle to be rebuilt.

Was not happy with the parts done yesterday so cleaned and gave a couple additional coats of bluing then finished the remaining parts off.

Did not wanted to create a thread just for this... in case it becomes a project, decided to ask the question here.

Should I leave it alone or put a piece of tool steel on it? I have some material that I can cut a piece to size...

Or just leave it as is?

I don't plan to use that section/area at all... just wanted to see if I could make it look better...

I have different thickness of tool steel to cut from...

I thought I had a scrap piece big enough... but no. Found it and it was too small... but I can cut from the one in the previous photo above... or one that is not as thick...

Photos are always tricky to tell, how deep is it?
It looks fairly shallow, in which case what about just milling it flat?

Not enough meat... that is as much as I can mill... let me know if these photos help...

My concern with putting the tool steel on there, how are you going to mount it? If you drill and tap you're just creating weak spots in the casting. Brazing? Epoxy? There are more experienced folk here but I'm leery. I'd consider putting some matching paint on it and calling it good.
