POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Today, I used the tool that I use to make tools for my tools. I made a tool for another tool that I sometimes also use to make tools. Then there is the tool who makes the tools and gets dust all over his shop in the process.

These are some premium grinds, a RH workhorse and a facing tool, both for cutting steel. The 3/4 MoMax wasn't too bad to grind, heat control was really easy. I roughed them to shape with no relief on an old HF disc sander, then grind the reliefs and rakes in on the Sheckel grinder. I got some NOS Norton 53A wheels in a coarse 46 grit just for this purpose, turned out to be a good choice as the work was fast and reasonably cool compared to running finer stones.

Anyway, here's a pic. The small tools are for puny lathes.

Don't be a girly man with puny HSS, get pumped up!

Did Kamela write your post?

Yes, insulating on top of the ceiling tile as i go. Walls are already insulated. Panels are known as FRP (fiberglassed reinforced plastic) in the construction world.
Very familiar with FRP panels; used them on several projects with trim strips joining the panels. There is also a system that actually chemically bonds the joints so you end up with a continuous surface.

Just using it for oil splashing. I have the trim piece between the panels.

The bonded system is typically only used in food processing where you can’t have any cracks/crevices.

rescued my nosey dog from the hole he fell into and couldnt get out of.
Repairing a fence where the wooden posts had rotted so had to dig out a 900mm deep hole to remove the concrete.
He was only in there about 3-4 mins whilst my back was turned but still gave a little whimper as if to say help!
IMG20230424142359[1].jpg I still laughed at him.

It was either the material or I did something nasty to it when I drilled it out with that 1-5/16" drill. It's weird as it drilled fine, but wouldn't cut with the grooving tool until it did and then it jammed, snapping off the tip. Work holding or cutter geometry, even spindle speed didn't seem to have an effect

I think it was just cursed.
Do you have a hardness tester? Wonder if it was case hardened steel of some type. Really weird!

A buddy did have a bolt broke off in a motorcycle once. He couldn't drill it with standard drills. Ended up sharpening up a masonry bit (carbide tipped) with a steel cutting geometry for him, that cut it well. Some steels can be darned stubborn.

Dogs do provide almost as much entertainment as they do companionship. For example, a photo of our granddog Dachshund at rest:

As yogi Berra would say "this is like deja vu all over again"

And some lovely curls made with a ccgt insert. Get the speed and feed just right and these rattle gun off the chip guard

I don't unfortunately. I'm pretty puzzled by it as I was able to drill it with 3/16, 1/2" and 1-5/16" drills just fine. It was also non-magnetic when I started but definitely wasn't by when I had finished. Oh well, it's a pile of chips in the scrap bin so I guess I won that battle either way :)

110% agreed on thatIMG20230407172609.jpgIMG20230407172850.jpgIMG20230319124958.jpgIMG20230317114133.jpg
I have literally hundreds more!

Today I made some crystals.

They're each about a half inch.
I was actually surprised to see them as they are not intentional.
