Oil leaked out

A thick oil leaked out of my new busy bee 10x22 lathe when it was tilled too far getting it down the stairs to the basement.
The manual says it uses Mobilgear 627. Can't find too much info on it or where to buy it in Canada. Would gear oil for a boat motor
or a car work. From the spec sheets it appears to be a 100 weight gear oil. This is my first metal lathe so I am new to this.

Step one: Call Busy Bee and ask them what "local" oil you should use in it...I'm just thinking of maintaining the warranty.

If that doesn't get you anywhere.....and I'm assuming it came out of the carriage, not the gear box in the head.....

Step two: Put either 80W90 or 75W90 gear oil in it.

Your lathe isn't going to see as much use or pressure as a truck rear end will in 300,000km

My 12x36 Chinese lathe (King Canada) called for 22 weight hydraulic oil. I thought...hummmm....no.....and I've been running 0W40 synthetic engine oil in it. No problems at all.

It apperars to have leaked out of the carriage. The only thing the manual says about the carriage and slides is to lub the oil ports with 20w machine oil. It was -5c that day I guess thats why it was thick and looked like gear oil.

I cant say for sure about your particular lathe but i have always seen much lighter weight oils specified in headstocks. Certainly not anything as viscous as gear oil. Again i could be wrong but if thats what the manual says I suppose its correct. Mine uses an AW46 or 32 hydraulic oil which is water thin in comparison. It leaked as well moving it into the basement.

EP-100 has the same viscosity as 30wt engine oil or 85wt gear oil. I would use 75-90 syn gear oil.

I had a 1/2 share in XIMA version, your's is SIEG. When my son moved out I suggested I'll buy him out, "No, dad, I'll buy you out" I had found a planetary geared pulley from Lathemaster that cut the speed in half. A better option is VFDing it.

Here's a guy turning one of them into a fine lathe http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=6990.0

When they call for 20 wt machine oil on the carnage and slides they're probably wanting way oil which is often 20 wt. The problem is finding it in less than 20 litre pails. I finally bit the bullet and bought a lifetime supply, up till then I used winter weight bar oil for a chainsaw. It has tackafiers that stop it from running off the bed.

im looking for replacement oil myself for my pm11x27 and this is just my opinion, but most of the larger lathes i have worked on had pumps in the head stock gearing, and these used a fairly heavy oil, on the other hand im pretty sure this little lathe use's more of a splash type system which i think would mean lighter oil. it seem,s to me a good choice might be something like john deer hi-gard, it's a combination hyd/gear oil,but then you run into a high detergent oil, and the lathe has no filter so that,s out, anyway, most all of the oils i have found so far don,t say non detergent, and that includes the mobil gear 627, probably making a mountain out of a mole hill, but i have found so much crap or lack of in this manual i am just suspicious, but then i may just be old.. i still have not found a fuse on this lathe any help would be appreciated
