I have a pre 64 winchester model 70 rifle with a rear dovetail sight base ( as in pictures) on it. I'm trying to identify what type of rear sight this was, the holes in it are all threaded and the center one has a screw in it. Anyone ever see a base like this or know what kind of sight this was....flip up or what?1000001415.jpg1000001414.jpg

I too have a pre '64 model 70. On mine, the barrel band had a dovetailed blank in that slot. I have always enjoyed the marketing philosophy that put iron sights on a 'Rifleman's rifle'. Mine is a 264 Win Mag with a 26" barrel. Not too many riflemen then or now that could make use of that caliber shooting iron sights.

Out of curiosity, I did a web search and found a few images. Neither looks exactly like your base, but may be helpful.

This rifle belongs to another gentleman whose grandfather owned it. It appears to have been made in 1940 and is a .270

The rifle means a lot to the owner and he was wanting me to fix a couple of things, keeping the rifle as close to how it is now as possible. He would like that possible rear sight to be repaired to the way it was.....if possible.....I was hoping to find the type of sight it was and make it whole if possible. The closest I've got so far is it looks like an old german claw mount that attached the ring by 2 screws from the bottom and then was dovetailed in....but at this point who knows. I would like to research as much as possible then present the results to him so he may decide what he would like to do.

Go to eBay. Vintage rifle sights. Many to choose from. Might find one to fit insert in dovetail or remove insert and mount in dovetail.

I appreciate all the help folks.....too date I've been unable to identify the base. I believe if the base isn't identified the owner will elect to leave as is.

Want to thank all of you for your input.

I think you found it derf......stith alaskan 7/8 front dovetail base. I found an exact picture with the dovetail and 3 threaded holes......thanks so much guys, you made my day.
