I've been using electrolysis for removing rust for a while now it works great and leaves a gray oxidation coat on the metal. It only takes a couple of days at the most so I think even with the wood handles it would be ok. I have a 5 gal bucket set up to do smaller parts, but you can see how it removes paint and rust both. The first photo
is the parts after they came out of the tank and the second is after they were washed off with a garden hose. The third is a pic of my big tank set up.

Be careful Charles, i started out with one monkey wrench about 20 years ago !!
i keep some of the smaller ones in cigar boxes and tool boxes.

I haven't tried the phosphoric acid, mostly because I haven't found a source for it.

There's a product called Ospho that's mainly phosphoric acid.

To be fair, I didn't order it until I was sure it wasn't going to be needed for the war effort.

I'm not worried. I wouldn't dream of wasting space and money on a bunch of wrenches that I'll never use.
