On the other hand, it would be theoretically possible to see the curvature laterally - side to side - if you had a clear enough view.

It's said that sailors in the middle of an ocean with a flat calm sea can detect it, though the visible horizon from sea level is only about 12 Nautical miles..

As Navigator in USN I’ve been on the bridge, significantly above sea level, on calm days in the middle of the Caribbean, Mediterranean & Atlantic and have not been able to detect any curvature.

Draw me a right triangle if you would . Small side is 25 . Hipopotimus is 3950 . Need the large side .

I know A squared + B squared = C squared , divided by 2 = the hippopotimus .

Trying to find out how much rise of a curve of the earth I see in a 50 mile distance across the horizon .

I don't have a trigonomic calculator here . TIA

Here is a calculation. No trig. But does not account for arc length being 50 miles. I just used a line segment 50 miles long.
Also used 3950 miles for the radius of the earth provided by ChazzC. Hope this helps.

I think it doesn't matter which side of the Atlantic you live, it's a common denominator amongst most Politicians - the higher up the food chain they get, the worse they are ........... and don't get me started on the corruption and dishonesty aspects.
Happily, we are able to swap idiot/crook for idiot/crook after a few years - just to change the political scenery, as it were.
Don't fool yourself that you're really going to improve it.
