Hallo guys.

I want to get myself a gas cannister for doing small brazing,silver soldering and heating up small parts,but I am in two minds on which of these two types of gas I need. I know the MAP-PRO burns sligtly hotter than the propane and is slightly more expensive as well.

Now I need your professional advise. Can I use the propane for the same purposes as the MAP gas like brazing and such? Please let me know. Thank you in advance.

I have done lots of copper pipe soldering and never needed the approx 100 degree F of additional heat from Map-Pro. For small parts I cannot imagine it would be worth the additional cost.

I use both for lighting up campfires and the propane stove . Both are hot and the small bottles get refilled for the lanterns and Coleman stove at the camp . I've never noticed a difference between the two . :dunno:

I will *never* use propane for sweating copper pipe fittings again. MAPP (pro) is a great deal faster. The expense seems significant when you buy a bottle, but they last a good long time, so the actual additional expense is pretty small. (At least here.)

I reserve propane for lower temp stuff, like cooking, or for use with an aspirating burner as in a forge or melting furnace.

For brazing you need oxygen also of course- neither fuel is hot enough by itself
Got that in my arsenal. I should probably not have said brazing hey. I will mostly use it for silver soldering and heating for hot bluing and small heat treating jobs.

Givn the choice, Map-Pro EVERY time. Worth the extra for the shorter heating time and as noted, it wil llast longer.

IMHO, I don't find much of a difference with the MAP-Pro @ 3,730ºF VS or Propane @ (3,600ºF), and at more than twice the price, I just use propane. If I need hotter, I got Oxy-acetylene. The real-deal MAPP was much hotter and was worth the extra cost, too bad it's not available anymore.

If that pricing is in Rands, then R259.99 is £11.21GBP or $14.38USD

A little cheaper than what we pay in the UK but not by much.

£17.30GBP ($22.20USD, R401.23) each for Map-X (from the manufacturer of the Map-X torches)

£12.49GBP ($16.02USD) for propane.

£17.55GBP ($22.52USD, R407.03) For Map-Pro

What torch are you going to pair the gas with? Some torches can make better advantage of the additional heat content.

@Suzuki4evr

This is very true and will affect what you are attempting to do.
