Neil, I ended up fabricating mine out of leather as initially stated. Came out nicely, if I say so myself. Much easier to do than expected. I do like using the original leather type belt. Runs very nicely. I used artificial sinew tendon. Will see if it holds up. I am keeping an eye on it.
 
Best I think to not cut the belt' it is not that hard to disassemble the spindle and countershaft and install it in one piece.
