Lathe Setup Problems

Jonathan,

As long as there is no twist in the bed, a lathe doesn't need to be level. A milling machine table is different because if the table is known to be level, you can use a level to set up work.

Pretty much any synthetic coolant should be fine, just use whatever is available in your area. Kool Mist is a common brand available most anywhere. Using coolant does have its issues. You'll need to change it regularly to keep it from stinking and keep an eye open for rust.

Thanks, I will see what coolant they have around here. They have msc and grainger 10 minutes from my house. Would I be able to pour it into a bottle between uses, without having any problems?

Hello, I have my PM1340 all setup and level. I have the 4 low speed gears broken in, will break in the hgh gears tonight.

I am having a problem though, I can't get the lead screw to turn. I get the change gears to turn, but the leadscrew isn't turning. How do I get the leadscrew to turn?

I don't know, but the control lever for it will probably be marked F-N-R or something similar.

They have a lever with a symbol of a screw with a arrow towards the headstock, and one towards the tailstock, and the middle is just a line. That level gets the change gears turning, but the leadscrew isn't turning with them.

Maybe it's time to pop a couple of the covers off and take a look. It's probably something as simple as a missing rollpin or a misaligned fork or dog.

Your lead screw will only turn when you are setup for threading. It does not turn for power feeding. Check your manuel for the setup.

I wouldn't call my manual a actual manual, but I will check things out. The gears just might not be setup right yet.

Thanks

Jonathan,

If you want to cut threads, that three position lever needs to be up or down depending on whether you are cutting them toward the headstock or toward the tailstock. That will cause the lead screw (the threaded one) to turn at the rate determined by the upper two charts on your lathe. If you want to turn or face, that lever needs to be in the center position. Then the feed screw will turn at the rate determined by the lower chart on your lathe. If it's not turning when the lever is centered, you may have a gear out of place on the left side of the headstock (under the cover) or one of the selector levers (knobs) may not be fully engaged. It looks like there are three gears that you need to arrange depending on what you are trying to do.

And the 4 knobs at the bottom shuld be turned while the lathe is running so the gears can mesh.or rotat the chuck my hand.
