I have a PM1127 and I've been thinking of buying a Bison 6" set tru D1-4 3 jaw chuck and saw that PM also is selling one that's made in Taiwan

Does anyone have it? It costs half what the Bison would cost me

not sure which one I should get

I thought I had a good Asian 6" chuck until I got a Burned. Now I've got 4 Bisons. You may be happy with the PM, especially if it's a set tru, but there's no "may" in the equation with the Bison. Did you check Penn Tool? They usually go below list with Bisons. The way they tighten and hold and stay true through the range is noteworthy.

I have a number of set-tru type chucks including those from Bison and PBA, some of the Taiwanese made version's are their equal or better. PM/QMT use to carry the forged steel 3J scroll Chandox which was an excellent chuck, I know a few other lathe owners that have that one and their current PM/QMT Taiwanese version and have been very happy with them. Given the size/type of lathe you are using, I would think the Taiwanese chuck offered from PM/QMT would be a very good choice and I doubt you would notice the accuracy or performance difference to a Bison or PBA. Also for a forged steel chuck of that nature, I would recommend it over others of similar cost ones from Gator, Shar's, Buck, etc. versions. The PBA 6" 3 Jaw SETRITE is a great chuck, it is what I use, but current pricing with a back plate is about 2-3X the cost of the PM. If you have the money and want the best, then those are options, but the difference in performance would be marginal in my view. Also beware that many of the mainstream chuck makers (like PBS, Buck, etc.) have low cost chuck models, which are no better than the cheap Chinese ones as they are often just rebranded them. Brand name or country of origin does not always indicate that it is going to be a quality product.

One other thing to note, is the back plates for the set-tru style PBA/Bison/TMX chucks can be horrendously expensive. The Bison D1-4 set-tru back plate is $531 through MSC, ironically the chuck is the cheapest at $843. You can save some $$ by using a Gator back plate with a Bison/TMX chuck in many cases as the dimensions are often the same (TMX/Gator are were copies of the Bison).
