Chuck mount on Precision Mathews PM-1022V

Not a big deal at all. Just pick up a couple of the backing plates that P-M sells. (I know- backordered currently) Just order them (with your machine so hopefully shipping is free?) and eventually they will be back in stock.

From what I understand, the spindle mount is an odd duck in N. America; more common in Russia & parts of Europe is what I've heard.

While I’m waiting for my shiny new Precision Matthews PM-1022V lathe to be delivered, I’ve been thinking about a few things, and the chuck mount is one of them. After reading a few posts, I became concerned about the mounting system, as it seems to be a big deal. But I’m not sure I understand why.

Here’s my thought: If there’s a back plate available for purchase that attaches to a chuck, what’s the issue? My understanding is that the back plate is essentially an “adapter” for chucks to fit on the machine. So, I’m thinking I should be able to take any chuck, mount it on the back plate, and then attach that to the lathe. Is that right?

And if, as some have mentioned, spare back plates are currently on backorder from Precision Matthews, why can’t I just take the existing back plate off the current chuck and mount it on a different chuck? What exactly needs to be changed on the back plate to fit a commonly-available chuck?
Sorry for the late reply. I have a PM-1022V lathe have had great success. The chuck backplate was a little different than my previous Grizzly lathe but more accurate, precise and more features. The backplate is straight forward just pay attention to the registration marks on the side of the backplate and the spindle. I have purchased a couple old backplates from PM and added a collet holder and 4 jaw to them. To compensate for any spindle runout for my particular lathe, I attached each to the spindle and faced them along with sizing the registration boss for the collet holder and chuck respectively. I checked runout by attaching the holder to its backplate and clocked it around the three attachment bolts until I found best runout, added shims if necessary and once satisfied, stamped a registration mark on the backplate next to the spindle registration. Each accessory has its dedicated backplate, I don’t interchange them.

Hope I helped.
