Help me choose a mini lathe

This is hilarious. LOL

there you go, and that is why we can't have nice friends.

lol and he has a post count of exactly 1
He’s probably binge watching all the mini lay videos on YouTube. Or maybe he’s trying to figure out how to up his budget.
I ran a budget by my chief financial officer for the lathe, tooling and some other oddities. I got a hard rubber stamp no

So I’m on a real secret mission, hobby budget level, lol

I have brought it up in the meetings that my hobby and hobby skills over the past two years has made several parts that Ihave saved more than the lathe and tooling so far has cost me . I have a few small jobs im actually getting paid over the winter. Which will start to add to my entry hobby budget..

I think this is a verifiable problem. People blather out all kinds of stuff, and a viewer says these people are nuts, and decide to stear clear of a particular hobby. It must all seem overwhelming. There are lots of threads like this all over the internet. Oftentimes though an answer to a particular question is complicated, and a poster just isn't prepared for that. "What's wrong with my car, just tell me, what could it be given these symptoms?". Well here's a list. Question is what are they going to do about it? Oftentimes people, and I must say myself included, are just looking for a simple answer. But them all the "experts" (and some are, but not me) put in their 2 cents. And the questioner walks (or runs) away.

I don’t think we’re the problem. We’re totally normal around here. Lol
I blame the internet.
The other possibility is that the guy literally had a passing notion, and now that notion has passed.
It’s pretty awesome that we managed like 60 comments without him though.

Don't think we should be too hard on ourselves if someone posts only once, there are many different possible reasons for that.

A simple search by the OP would have yielded most of the info in this thread but many won't do that before asking their questions. That doesn't make our discussion any less useful, others will come on here and get the information they need.

Some of our best members started out asking the same question and have made an evolution from newbie to staff member @DavidR8.

So, there are definitely places on the internet where going "off topic" will get you banned. I personally am happy this isn't one of them.

Often times people drop the same question on 3 or 4 forums, and forget to follow up everywhere they posted the question. There are other hobby machinist forums I understand (although personally I think other forums are a myth like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster  )

Just go look at the rest of the internet, this place is an island of relative sanity in comparison....

I do hope that folks who come on here to ask these questions will eventually find their way back here if they decide to pursue the hobby. There are an almost infinite number of other choices, but I know I'm not alone in finding this place very special.

I've been using the internet since usenet days. it's the people (especially the moderators) that make any space safe and welcoming.

Thanks to all those who work behind the scenes to keep hobby-machinist.com what it is....

So far this has been the best of the Hobby lathe /mill “machinist” Forums

Many are not to open to the beginners or the beginners questions
Especially if you mention discount import lathes or god forbid 3-1 , lol

Theres still a bit of that old school rubbing with answers and teachings scattered between here , which I think is healthy.

Reminds me if the CA has the nicest mean people vs boston has the meanest Nice people joke , its about changing a flat tire. The short of it CA is all nice and sympathetic but away leaving you stranded, mean while boston is giving you a hard time for not being able to change a flat , wrong tools and by the time they are done talking your tires been changed.

I am on another “not machinist” forum. I like it a lot as its not for the thin skinned

I dont mind the banter/rubbing in between getting to answers.

Also this forum has been very helpful and open.

Im auto repair by trade can fix almost anything and with some time and info figure most things out.

What I lack is $$$ for my hobbies. Fun stuff
Getting help here and other forums has been great.
Thank you
