You don't need it ! That 8" Buck will bolt directly to the RT . 4 bolts and 4 T slot blocks . If you would want to use the chuck alone on your BP table you could use the plate . It's something handy to have .

Yeah I also ordered that 6” Vertex 3-jaw that I posted earlier in the thread because I have no willpower, LOL. I figure I’ll need to either buy the aluminum plate linked to earlier by Will or make one if I don’t want to use aluminum.
Doesn't matter if you have will power. I have plenty of Will power & many times it does me no good. I'm sitting here looking at 4 Amazon packages that just arrived. 3 arrived yesterday from Amazon. Bought stuff from HF yesterday & this morning, along with two Mikwaukee items I got from HD today too.
But to answer your question, it doesn't need to be thicker. My back plates are 3/4" thick but not including the register/boss for the chuck. I believe mine start out as 1" thick but again doesn't need to be.

So let me ask you this…would you prefer to go with aluminum, cast iron, or steel for the backing plate as I believe I’ve located pieces of all 3 materials that work size wise.
Either or . I used Aluminum jig plate to keep things light . ( and I had it in the basement )
Edit . This is just a plate for bolting to the BP .......not a back plate !
Definitely not alumn unless you had no other choice. I would choose cast iron as it's the most ideal for a chuck back plate but steel would be perfectly fine for a RT. Far less messy to machine to than CI. The steel might be a lot more expensive though?
I used alumn mic/tooling plate when I made the "adapter" for my super spacer, before I remachined the slots to eliminate that plate. It did work fine.
I voted not to use aluminum because it the chuck gets removed from the RT often, alumn is easy to dent & bang up & may need stoning more frequently?
Almost same amount of work to make the backplate so make it out of a more durable material? I dunno, just a thought, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.
