Harbor Freight Carbide Grinder

Nothing is easy...

Took almost all of my sand and I damaged it trying to get the pattern out.

Tried again with the same results.

Then I noticed the paint felt rubbery and tried to sand it a little. It started peeling off so I think the paint I had been using was latex and probably wasn't dry enough but it wasn't sticking very good to the PLA plastic either. I scraped and sanded most of it off and figured I'd just wax the pattern.

This bottle was probably ONLY 30 years old but the plastic shattered when I squeezed it. I used it anyway but I don't have time to keep messing with it today.

I'm not giving up on this idea yet but it will be delayed a little bit till I can try again.

I tried making the sand mold a couple more times and never got it to look very good. The furnace hasn't been hot enough to melt the amount of metal this casting would likely need and none of my molds looked good enough to set up the actual foundry. For now, I think I will just use the 3d printed pattern directly or keep using my big jar like I had been doing. I'm not fully giving up on the idea of casting one but, since I don't have the carbide grinder this was designed for anyway, I am putting this project on hold.

My sand might not be mixed perfect and the core part was never formed without some pockets. I think mostly I just need more practice ramming up the sand and getting the sand tempered right and not the pattern itself but I'd rather work on smaller patterns for parts I have more use for to get more experience casting.

My main goal with this was to practice using FreeCAD to design parts for 3d printing and I think that part turned out OK. Last time I checked, that stl file has only been downloaded twice but I don't know if it was someone from this group or if it has ever been printed besides the ones I printed myself.

$3,895 for a genuine Baldor diamond wheel tool room grinder.
I priced their aluminum oxide and silicon carbide?, wheels.
Over $1,000.

Another dumb question from a really novice hobby guy. I have one of those HF Central Machinery tool grinders as pictured above. Because of the tilt axis of the table, I'm tempted to grind on the side of the grinding wheel. Is this verboten? Somewhere I read that one should not do that. I've made some wooden jigs for grinding drill bits and cutting tools, but being able to use the tilt function of the table would make grinding more consistant and easier for an old guy like me.
The bearings are for a radial load. If you are careful, I think all of us have done it :)
