Five Cylinder Radial With Ohc

Looks nice, How do you gauge the tension you need on the belt.

That's a backplate of the engine, and you have a shaft coming out the back.
Are you going to do an electric start using that end of the shaft?
Very nice work.

Ken
The tension is assessed by holding the belt half way on the longest run. and twisting the belt it should tighten up at quarter of a turn.
This works on all sizes of syncro belts

I did look at the possibility of fitting a starter but thought it was going to be to heavy if I want to fly it.
The shaft as you see it in the photographs is in fact a handle to turn the gear train for testing, the shaft it fits over is 8mm and will have a eccentric to drive the two oil pumps coaxially to provide pressure and scavenging.
When I have all the tensioners done I will then remove the material between the tensioners and the mounting holes down to the size of the crank case.
Thank you for your questions.
Brian.

Absolutely brilliant work. Would the belts require some type of gaurd to prevent f.o.d damage in actual use?

An interesting point, as the belts are behind the cylinders I think they are well shielded. and if this motor gets to fly most of the cylinder will be inside the cowling anyway.
Thanks for the thought anyway I had not even considered it
Regards Brian.

Fantastic. You are crazy if you fly that work of art!
Robert

Thanks Robert for confirming something I had often wondered about.
Brian.
