First mill project - slitting tool advice

How does this look? How would I pick between 56 and 72 teeth?

Slitting Saws, 0.091" Thick, 2-3/4" Mill Diameter, 72 Teeth

You can get 2.5mm wide slitting saws , doing a 10mm deep slot with a 2.5mm end mill sounds like a very bad time indeed o_O

McMaster skips from 2 to 3mm. The slot width neednt be very precise here it just holds a 2mm thick clockspring tang.

72 for steel , 56 for aluminum . These saws need to evacuate chips easily . Air , flood coolant , oil on a brush etc . Take the cut in one shot . DO NOT CLIMB MILL ! :cautious: Conventional only .

If you don't have arbors you can make them quite easily if you don't want to purchase them .

Thanks all. The arbor needs a keyway no? I say that based on the image of the saw. Ive not handled one.

Was going to buy this one:

Straight-Shank Arbor for Slitting Saws, for 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8" and 1" Arbor Diameters

Nice one ! :encourage: Keyway isn't really necessary unless hogging out some big time material . You can use a lock washer under the blade if you choose , never had one loosen up in 48 years . Just keep clearing the chips .

I'm seeing them from metric land suppliers but maybe they are more difficult to find in America ?

2.5mm is .0984" . A .100" end mill would work. Another option and perhaps better, would be to use a 3/32" (..0938") and make two or three passes. The first down the center and then two cleanup passes for the sides.

Thanks. Did not know slotting end mills existed. The depth of cut may be limiting, when I search for 2.5mm or equivalent inch size the depth of cut is typically not sufficient. Is there a reason not to take multiple passes with a slitting saw?
It will wander and even if it doesn’t you’re still left with standing portions between the cuts.

Keep looking, there are very large slotting saws available.
