So, I've had power equipment, racing go kart, and food business. Always maintained liability insurance and didn't find the cost excessive compared to what might have happened if I didn't have it. Once actually got a call from my mom when I was out running errands that a customer tried to start his chainsaw inside our shop and was bleeding. Fortunately it was just from bumping up against another piece of equipment but I did end up giving him the repair free.
One thing I learned early on was to always have my customers sign an invoice or work order that included the words "all claims are subject to binding arbitration in the jurisdiction of -----". This is to inform ambulance chasing lawyers that there won't be any big jury awards.
You can avoid lots of headaches by doing things right from the start and consulting with professionals when needed.
