Finding Work For Milling Machine

LOL . Snowblowers ....................I bought one about 12 years ago , still has the price tag hanging on it . I'd buy 5 more if I never had to use them also ! :big grin:

When the OP has the space , he can PM me and I'll stock him up !

The local machine shops here don’t want to do business with hobbyists. If you can reach the hobby people somehow for one off jobs, usually pretty simple, you can build a spot for yourself. I contacted 5 shops here for a lathe gib, only one would fool with it. But don’t target your friends. They want free work. Which would not be so bad if they supplied the materials. Worst thing about a mill is that a $30 part requires $300 in tooling.

I've run an ad on Facebook marketplace that recently got flagged and taken down. Apparently promoting services is against the rules. Same story on our local Craigslist equivalent. Craigslist is dead in my area, the prevailing platform is a local service called KSL. I did have some small success doing so, I made around $100 over the course of a month prior to ads getting removed.
What exactly do they have against it?

In terms of snowblowers, what types of repairs would you trend towards, or shy away from? Gummed up fuel systems are an easy win. But say something like a claimed problem with the auger gearbox? There's nothing I'm nervous about in terms of my abilities to fix, more just what makes sense from a money making perspective.

You really want to cherry pick everything. I would look for machines that have the variator(drive/speed) wheel or control cables out of adjustment.

Dirty carbs are a simple fix also for small two stroke like chainsaws as mentioned.

I got 10 snowblowers for scrap (free) and took parts from the ones that were basket cases and used them to fix the better ones.

Made a killing off of that deal and got $475 for a big 36” ariens that was in the lot.

My sentiments exactly! First snowblower was a self-propelled Craftsman purchased on an after Christmas sale because I shoveled drifted snow 5 times one afternoon - didn’t snow the rest of that season.

I make it a point to live where no one knows what a snow fence or a snow blower is for.

They laughed at me in Central Virginia (Waynesboro) in 1982 when they saw my Craftsman; then they gave me dirty looks in early ‘83 after a 30” snowfall.

Thought I would give a quick update and show off the business cards I worked up with help from my wife. I drew the logo, she did the overall design using a tool called Canva, they also offered printing that I used.

I blurred out my contact info for obvious reasons.

And of course, I have to give credit to the inspiration for the name and logo:

I'm going to go try and sell myself and hand them out at some local businesses. Wish me luck!

Good luck. Since you blurred the contact info on your cards, I can’t tell if you put your city where you are. These days it’s hard to tell when a business is located by phone number anymore. And you never know how far your cards may travel.

It’s always funny to me when I see blacked out license plates on pictures, because what can anyone benefit from it. It’s already out there for everyone who see the car in person anyways. [emoji38]
