I'm looking to buy some felt to make new wipers out of, but not sure what type is best.

I've made a few using some felt that came with a South Bend felt kit that I sourced from ebay...

McMaster has felt in various densities and materials... ranging from soft to hard, in wool, polyester, etc...

I'm guessing I would need a 'firm', hard would be too stiff...?

Would the wool be better than polyester? Or not?

I'm a fuzz out of my comfort zone with this... any information would be appreciated.

Thanks- Bear

How about a sample pack from these folks?

I made some felt wipers embedded in plastic holders, I used 1/4" Grade F1 Pressed Wool Felt which is the highest density and holds up well. I bought a 12"x12" sheet, which goes a long way. The felt is behind the plastic/rubber wipes so that chips do not get caught in the felt, I would also add oil to them.

Being somewhat frugal, I used the wiper material from inside several computer printer cartridges. Also I collected
(maybe I'm a pack rat):frown 2: a bunch of red felt from a scrapped piano saved for later use. If I ever move I may have
to call 1-800-PACK-RAT for a moving/shipping container...:encourage: Believe it or not, such a business exists with that number.
Need something? I probly got it........... ;)

ps: With all the money I have saved over the years, I could spring for a brand new Deckel FP-1:idea:

I purchased the same felt as Mksj , from McMaster Carr. Worked great. It is very firm. I used it on my K&T and my lathe. I would think harder felt to softer felt works better for wiping. I have neoprene wipers on the boring mill and they are outstanding for keeping chips out.

Ok, thanks, everyone.

I'll order the recommended felt from McMaster... I just need to see what thickness I'll need.

Thanks again

I have purchased felt from these people 3 times. They will sell you remnants pretty reasonable.
Call and the nice lady there will take your order on the phone.

I, too, have purchased several times from Duro-Felt: great prices and free shipping in U.S.
