My son's old 1950's belt sander has a severly worn platen.

Can it be surface ground?
Could you JB weld or weld/tac a sheet of stainless steel to flatten the belt surface/backing?

Ideas?

Here is a used replacement on Ebay. I don't know how bad it is.

can you back it off enought to adhere a ceramic or glass plate to the metal? I believe they make something like that for the 2x72 belt sanders.

I don't know. Good idea though.
I need to run over there to freshen my memory as to how it's mounted, adjustments etc.

Looks like mild steel. Just get a short chunk of 6" channel, and make a new one. You know you need another project. Mike

OK; where can i get a glass platen for a 6x48 belt sander??

I had a Powermatic that someone had adhered some sort of fiberglass in a resin to, which was really nice.

I also saw some threads on a knife forum that you can use a granite tile and jbweld it to the surface.
