D1-4 chuck questions

i have a jet 1440 lathe and the other day decided to clean and lubricate my 3 jaw chuck that was mounted on it. took it off de greased it (probably original factory grease in it nasty stuff) put it back together and went to put it back on the spindle. i ended up turning out the pins like 3 turns before i could get the cam lock to engage properly? when i re assembled the chuck i screwed the pins in all the way, is this normal?

Yes, typically one can count the turns or measure the height to get them back to their previous position. They are not meant to be screwed in completely.

Some cam pins have lines scored on them to mark the starting depth.

My 3 jaw D1-5 came from the factory with one of the pins in the wrong place. I had to turn it out a turn to get it to lock.
