Carbide lathe tool insert questions

Yes, that one your showing will take a 1" insert holder, so I guess the took .250 from the bottom.

Does anyone know if David's book is available to buy in PDF or EBOOK? I couldn't find it at Amazon in electronic format. I more or less stopped buying paper books after I cleaned out about a quarter ton of technical books and had to basically give them away to make room and declutter recently. (That was a painful process.)
@Reddinr I do not offer my book Introduction to Indexable Tooling as an eBook or PDF for a variety of reasons. The printed version includes several curated lists of field tested tools organized in groupings based on the size of your QCTP (AXA, BXA, CXA). I have followed this thread and would be happy to share my thoughts with you via a DM if you are interested. The HP of your 16” lathe would be one consideration that would influence my recommendation on I.C. size. Start a conversation with me if you want to dive deeper. Beware what you see on eBay and Amazon, lots of counterfeit name-brand stuff listed, and some of the used toolholders can be good or terrible choices depending on condition. Happy to help if I can.

No, it doesn't look thin at all.
The Shars 250-301XL I looked at looked thin to me. Maybe a bad drawing. This is the drawing associated with the 250-301XL.

Be careful on QC toolholder choice. They vary a lot in actual dimension and you can’t always depend on published drawings from Shars. I recommend you buy one and check it out before buying multiple copies. I have found the versions from All Industrial and Precision Matthews just as good as the Shars versions. Have a look at this post.

I know what you mean about tool holders. I have a couple of Shars ones that are too snug on my QCTP dovetail. Most have been fine. The tight ones are on the fix-it pile and have been for a couple of years.

If I get a clean check up tomorrow I'll most likely move forward on the equipment . If I hear something bad , stay tuned . :)
