Hello! I just purchased my first lathe, an EMCO C8, and am getting everything cleaned up and organized. It was rust free for the most part, but some of the tooling, etc. had some rust here and there. I've removed that with Evaporust and not knowing otherwise, shot the parts with a light coat of WD-40 to keep them from flashing rust until I know what to coat them with. Should I just use way oil for that? I see there is a lot of debate on the use of grease on chuck internals - I'm really asking about rust prevention moreso on those as well as centers, tooling, etc. Any suggestions?

any light oil is good. 3 in 1, Starrett M1, spindle oil. .. I spray Fluid Film on parts, because it protects and stays without collecting dirt.
Any oil basically is better than nothing, WD40 is only a flash rust and water dispersant. I don't consider it a longer term lube/preventative.

3-in-1 should be banned from being anywhere near any form of tool or machine. it is primarily for putting on garden gate hinges, not tools or machinery. Heck 3-in-1 is outright BANNED from our household.

Way oil, Boeshield T-9, ANYTHING but 3-in-1 is usable for rust prevention. Personally I use way oil because it has a tackifier in it.

I almost couldn't believe it, The guy I bought my mill from had it in a garage with a swamp cooler running, His mill and tooling had virtually no rust...

He used Boeshield T9 on all none moving exposed metal. way oil on everything else.

Boeshield T9
Fluid Film
My machines live in a very dusty environment so I use covers.

Boeshield T-9 has been working well protecting my taps and dies so far...
