Barrel vise

I think of cast iron as being brittle and not having as great a tensile strength as steel. Did you choose that material because it was what you had on hand, or was there a specific reason?

Thin sections of cast iron wouldn't be suitable for this type of work.
since the author used more than adequate mass, performance will not be a factor.

I agree. I have a very similar set up and it works flawlessly. Get some rosin and sprinkle it on the inside of the aluminum halves before you clamp the barrel in... Very nice job!

Thanks guys! Ductile iron is a very strong material. Not to be confused with other types of cast iron. Any quality bench or machinist vise is made of ductile iron. Like was mentioned the mass in this vise and the lack of flex designed by the close bolt spacing to the bushings should give ample holding force with properly torqued bolts.

Very nice vise! Looks like it will be more than adequate for even stubborn military barrels. As was asked before, I think any steel will work. Your design is very good for the vise's intended purpose. So most mild steel in this design should preform satisfactorily. Thanks for sharing.
