I recently made a barrel vise for a future rifle build I would like to do. The vise is made of ductile cast iron and Will use aluminum barrel bushings. The bushings are 3" long and 1.735" dia. I made six of them to be later bored to whatever barrel profile I need. Four 5/8-11 S.H.C.Screws will do the clamping. The vise can be mounted to a sturdy bench or mounted right to the mill table.

I made a vise very much like yours many years ago. I bore the sleeves close to the barrel shape, split them half. I usually use a layer of paper with barrel rosin. Have not run into a barrel that could not be removed ! Great vise.

Where do you find the cast iron? It sounds odd but CI is tougher to find (at a reasonable price) than any other metal.

Thanks guys!

It was scraps we were throwing away years ago at work.

I think of cast iron as being brittle and not having as great a tensile strength as steel. Did you choose that material because it was what you had on hand, or was there a specific reason?
