Followup to say I got 'er done. I'm happy with how the scales are attached, and super jazzed about starting to play with Touch DRO. Just finished the DRO install, haven't used it to make chips yet.
Yuriy said he hadn't seen it done this way, so I thought I'd show some pics.
1/4" thick stainless for the Y-scale bracket, total overkill but it was free from a friend's scrap pile. Definitely stiff!
I bolted the read-head bracket to the base casting. Not a machined surface, but it indicated in fine. I did file off the paint and bondo on that surface so at least it is bolted to cast iron, not thick paint and filler.
Nothing left to do but some cable tidying. It's calibrated and working.
