Do you think the tip has anything to do with whether the workpiece is magnetic or (my guess) just adding mass to the boring bar?
Nope, definitely something to do with magnetism. My son learned it from an old guy at his previous job. I couldn't believe it my self. Here is the magnet he used. The blue part is plastic.

These guys get my scrap once or twice a year.

Neighbor lost one of the two adjusting rods for his old John Deere hay rake so he asked me to make him something that would work. A little machining and welding produced what you see below. Unfortunately, he didn't tell me the one he lost was 14" shorter than the one he had. So now I'm "adjusting" the length of the one pictured so it will work for him. I enjoy doing this type work 'cause its something to keep an old mind sharp.

Better than the other way around.
No problem. Just put it in the parts stretcher. A photo of the stretcher would be much like the photo of the welded square steel tubing that is an optical illusion. It is one of those tools every hobby machinist would love to have.

Nothing too special. I spent an hour a day all week trying to make a rod with 1/4-20 threads on one end and 5/16-18 threads on the other end. I learned many valuable lessons, and then asked a tool maker to do it for me. It worked! Tool makers are even better than my own machine tools! Anyways the end result is this adjustable tailstock lock on my Atlas. Now it'll never be facing the "wrong" way again. And it's vastly superior to the original in operation. Wish it was chrome, but even the tool maker wasn't interested in that.
