That's a cool photo tour. So you guys just lay down beads of stellite and then turn it flat? That part looks great. I have seen on of those Bullyards in person- massive.

Today I turned a stock S475 into a S480 with billet wheel and race cover. It was fairly easy to do. Just had to machine a bigger pocket. Went from 104.5mm to 114.5mm. I converted it to inches so I could use the dials on my lathe. 114.5mm is 4.508 and I hit it right on the money.

Yes. This particular one went to another site and was plasma welded on a machine, but usually it is done on-site by hand. Our ace welder retired a few years back and his replacement didn't last very long. We have new blood coming in soon, but I hope we keep sending the bigger stuff like this out ... much less rework this way (cracking and porosity).

Stellite isn't so bad to machine, the colmonoy-6 overlay is FARRRRR more challenging.

When I did the CNC conversion on my mill, I changed the motor timing belt pulley and added a new belt to increase the maximum spindle speed. It also meant that my minimum spindle speed had increased.

I need to cut some change gears and decided that I would temporarily return the motor timing belt pulley back to the original set-up. As the "Law of Cosmic Cursidness" would have it, I could find the old belt but not the old motor pulley. A few minutes on the lathe to machine a blank and then a quick CNC job on the mill resulted in a new 22 tooth timing belt pulley for mill motor.

What is the coating on that? I would never have considered anything but parkerizing, but now that I see that, I like it.

It is a DuraCoat Firearm Finishes coating. This particular coating actually has metal flakes in it, and is a two part epoxy type of coating. There are 4 coats of color and 4 coats of clear on that 1911. It takes 3 or 4 weeks for it to fully harden. After that it is like armor, and is very chemical resistant to everything except parts cleaner. Don't ask me how I know.
