2021 POTD Thread Archive

So after lurking on this site for way to long I thought I better try some participation and post a pic of my work in progress.
I was fortunate enough to acquire a full and unmolested Dore-Westbury MK2 milling machine kit with large table, long column and table power feed a few weeks a go and have finally made a start on the bottom end.

I don’t suppose anyone noticed my seized screw from yesterday was a left-hand thread, eh? I sure didn’t. At least I didn’t cotton on until I kept taking more and more passes but it still wouldn’t start in the part — then the penny dropped. Guess that’s why I couldn’t get it out in the first place…

Anyway, all was not lost and I ran another blank and put the threads on the correct way this time, here’s the finished screw. I used 4140, diameter is somewhere around a #7 (0.0140”) and the thread is 40 tpi.

yea, I've done the opposite. neighbor brought over a screw from chain saw, I put a gauge on it and got the pitch and size.
cut the threads... no go... I needed to cut left hand threads..

Today was a long day in both garages. My heating palette arrived, all 6 tones of them. In the big garage i had to wheel them in with a wheelbarrow and rearrange them. I wasn't tired it went quickly, the other garage we managed to unload the 3 tones directly over the inspection pit, and left them over night. I wanted to see if it will hold up also i was tired and my injured back said no. So early before work i started rearranging them, i have to stack them in one row to have enough space in the garage. Just as was finishing the second palette the end toward my machine shop collapsed, i had to cut up one of the pallet and make a brace. With it in places i stack the pallets and left for work i still have more then half a tone to go it will be tight.

What Tennessee Ernie Ford said, "Sixteen ton, and what do you get, another day older, and deeper in debt". Pellet stoves are are pretty good heat. I used to sell and install them, and spent a lot of time servicing those installed by others. Set up right they are pretty dependable, and like everything some are better than others. looks like you won't freeze this winter. Cheers, Mike

I spent the afternoon doing some hard turning. The centring scope I got from eBay had a MT4 arbor, which wouldn’t fit the mill - so after removing it from the scope, I dialled it in true in my 4 jaw on the lathe and got to work. Carbide tool, took it slow and took it from the original MT4 down to a straight 3/4” shank to be used with MY 3/4” R8 collet.
