I acquired a take off 26 inch 6.5x47 26 inch barrel from bolt gun. I decided I will make 6.5 Grendel out of it. Borescoping It shows I could get 22 inches of good barrel by cutting off the full chamber, and cut the muzzle and thread it.
After chambering, the challenge would be how to turn down the breech side down to proper dimension for the barrel nut clearance. The tapered barrel is too cumbersome to turn between center.
This is the perfect application for the rotating tailstock spider. When I was looking for a live center, Mickey pointed out a Royal with interchangeable tip on eBay, which I end up buying. I thought about sending it for reconditioning and acquire tips for it, then the light bulb turned on. This will be the perfect candidate to convert to tail stock spider. Just machine the spider to screw into the live center.
I sketched up the spider, but I could start not on it due to the workload I had - lots of barrels. At that same time frame I was in conversation with Jeff S, Z2V, about spindle bearing play he was having with PM1236. It was pretty sloppy, it came that way. When he got the slop taken care of, I asked him if he were open for a challenge, I sent him a very rough sketch of the spider to review. He agreed to tackle it, and he got it done fairly quickly.
Thank you, Jeff.
Back to the Grendel barrel. I normally cut a register past the barrel extension after finishing the tenon. The register being on the same axis as the bore centerline and chamber, I use it to indicate the barrel when I start turning it down to finish dimension.
See the shiny section just past the barrel extension, the register. I turn this section between 0.015 to 0.020 over finish dimension
Now on the TS spider on this application, I chucked up the muzzle side in set tru using a copper ring for the barrel to pivot on. The barrel extension is held by the spider jack screws, and that side is dialed in on the register I turned down after finishing the chamber/tenon. Had to re-position the QCTP for the VNMG carbide cutter to clear the spider. Turning was toward the HS side.
