2019 POTD Thread Archive

Haven't been able to move the big Gorton mill since I got it pulled kicking and screaming into the new machine shop space on a badly overloaded 5k pallet jack . Had managed to get it on to 1 1/2"x 1/8" wall pipe, which it quickly turned into an oval-ized shape, which, while pleasing to the eye, doesn't do much in the way of being able to move the aforementioned mill. So threw together this quick, and dirty toe jack from scrap. Lifts the mill just fine, and was much more reasonably priced ( $0 ) than the $350 amazon option. Now have to hunt up some old truck axles to put under the mill base to get it to it's final resting place. Mike

Today i had the day off, so i got stuck in the big garage and made the last of the big rust repair on the little niva, i had to form and shape pieces in couple of thickness and laid down about 1 kg of welding wire, i also welded in a piece of thick wall tubing to have something to jack against. Today was a hard dirty day, not fun welding upside down welding spatter burning me.

Sometimes you have to rule by sheer willpower... Check that one off your bucket list. Keep up the great work and updates!

Sometimes you have to rule by sheer willpower

It is starting to hold up progress on other things, so i'm determined to do something everyday to get as many hours as possible that way to get it done as soon as possible. This is proving to be harder every day as i'm busy and more busy.

Few hours later, cleaning up couple of welds, and wire brushing i sprayed zinc high primer on the front wheel arch and then i mixed up some some undercoating for the trunk floor and some of the floor pan there are couple more spots still to get undercoated but the undercoat can run out, i'll wait till i get every rust repair done so i can get everything undercoated nice and thick.

Finished some mods to a poster tube I made a couple of years ago for the International Worm Conference in LA. It's coming up again in about a month, so this needed ticking off the list.

I wanted to make a cap within the top cap to hold thumb tacks, so they weren't rattling round the bottom of the tube or getting lost. Starting material on the left (thanks Pete!), cap on the right. Already threaded the inside of the cap to 1.78x28tpi.

OD of inner cap turned down and threaded. Tried doing the cross slide plunge in threading technique instead of using the compound, but it gave alot of chatter. Live'n'learn.

fits though

done (thumb tacks not visible)

This is what it looks like open

The clasp on the bottom end of the strap broke as it was at an angle against the tube, so made a hinge out of some alu angle, pinned it to the bottom cap and attached the cap with a screw loctited into the hinge.

Revamped poster tube, guaranteed to be the snazziest one at the conference :)

now I just need to do the dull job of finishing the analysis so I can design the poster..

Also, not a project for one day, these are a couple of projects I've been working on for the last two years since I've been here. I think they turned out okay :)

lots of fun meeting their families too!

Thinking about posting what I did in the shop today, but then I read GoceKU's posts. I feel a little like Charlie Brown and Linus lying on the grass. Charlie Brown says to Linus "Do you ever see shapes in the clouds"? Linus says "I do, for example over there I see Joan of Arc and the storming of the Bastille, you can see the flags flying over the ramparts. And over there, there's Washington crossing the Delaware, lots of ice on the water. What do you see, Charlie Brown?" Charlie Brown says "I thought I saw a Ducky and a Horsey, but I changed my mind".

So seeing GoceKU's posts, I changed my mind.

One of the great things about this site is that we have super experienced, skilled and capable people posting along side of entry level people. AND everyone is supported for what they can do. So bring it on and lets see what you did in your shop. Large, Small, simple or complex everyone and everything is welcome here.

another thing btw is the Global engagement on this site.

Only real way to learn new skills and get the experience is to do it, people that work as hard as me are rare even here, i only show about 1/4 of what i'm working at home, i also hold 2 full time jobs during the week and some weekends don't feel bad or shy to share what you've done in your shop, i often over complicate things, and love seeing simple things done. I do learn a lot from them.

Seriously, thank you for posting the Niva project. The value a one's time, when shared, is immeasurable.
