2016 POTD Thread Archive

One of my last bikes as a kid was a Raleigh English Racing Bike. It had thin tires and a 3-speed shifter.
I took it to a service station once to air up a tire. Being a bit ham-fisted with the air hose, I exploded the tire in my face. I was covered with black powdered rubber and bits and was psychologically scarred for life.
I had to carry the bike about 10 blocks to get it back home.

I still can't air up a tire without worrying about it exploding.

That's how you learn! Fill it until it blows, and then let some out.

I would have to find one I could sit up straight on as the back problems do not put up with the bent over for longer periods grabing the handle bars. If I do a lot of walking I have to get the cane out, It ____ getting older.

I have too have mega back , leg and arm problems ..
had to give upcycling abut 17nyrs ago as things became worse .

two year ago I got hold of a new cheap collapsable foldable cycle for around $ 150 : 00 USD . Turned the handles bar retaining stem back to front , removed & refitted the now inverted handle bars & re attached the brakes & gear change. So now the bars are abut four inches further back than normal as well a bit higher than usual .

I took the razor blade style saddle off , threw it in the bin , got a big fat ladies horse's ass saddle , padded to the N th degree with a gel pad on top under the skin .
I 've raised the saddle post as high as is safe , rotated the saddle post clamp so that the saddle has moved forward about four inches .

I now can ride a bike again ......much in the manner of the old early 1900's " sit up & beg cycles . I no longer have to lean forward to the bars and neither is my back bent .
For safety reasons I can touch the floor with the balls of both feet when sat on the saddle . The only thing I have to be careful of is that I don't make slow sharp turns just in case my knees whacks the handle bar grip .
Yet to look a the cycle you wouldn't really know why it's quite different to others till youlook a bit closer & put your thinking cap on . My mate tried to ride thecycle .. gave it back to me saying " I'd rather walk Dave " .

Ground both sides, and found something interesting on side b, a strange pattern that would spark heavy when ground over....

See those light colored streaks in the Y direction? It would spark heavy on those areas, also when I made the first rough pass those areas didn't hit, they were about 5 tenths low.... maybe it's chitty cast iron
I'll also spare you the photo of my spark out pass, done with a slow dress
Side A had a great finish, and did not have those streaks, you can see them on the ends as well

It could be it was cast that's been hot rolled as in malleable rolled cast iron , it's as tough as any thing going against the direction of the rolling as there is a grain .

Those tires almost remind me of what was on my motor cycle, and old trail bike in low you could have climbed a wall if the tires had suction cups.

lots of companies making fat bikes now....tires are getting wider every year....
mine is a 2015 khs 4 season 3000
4.8" wide tires

Now that is one I'd even like to ride.
