2015 POTD Thread Archive

I'd try to find a way to get paid for making a steel one. Cast Iron breaks too easily, just look how easy this one broke.

I'd just make a copy of the Veritas. It's a lot more useful. But definitely see if you can at least get the $38 from Fedex.

I think all of us looking at it is what broke it! :big grin:

The broken rest is more of a principals thing, because I will be replacing it with something custom. I payed a pretty penny for this thing, so it should be 100% functional out of the box.

Once i finish inspecting this thing, I'll start a picture heavy thread in the tool junkies section. :D

Wired up my "hospital grade" power bar:

Made a little tailstock side tool holder/tray:

Made a small metal fab table that I've been needing for a while from some scrap and a couple old tool boxes that were going in the trash:

Table is just something to weld, bash and beat things on. Yep, those are old bed rails!

:)

I'm especially happy I was able to repurposed the tool boxes as they are the very first boxes I owned/bought as a kid. They'd long since gone out of use but I just couldn't bring myself to throw them out.

I hear ya Dan, the frustrating issue is they shipped it with the tool posts installed in the first place. They know better, this is not the first grinder shipped to end up with a broken tool post and it won't be the last. I would also "ring" check the stones prior to use.

I have made more stuff out of old bed rail angle iron. Whenever I see them in the trash I grab em and just stick them in the rafters of the garage for the day when I will need them. I find that they are harder than most angle iron and will usually just laugh at a sawzall blade, cutoff wheels or a fiber chop saw are my tools of choice for cutting them up.

Read or heard somewhere (so maybe rather dubious) that bed rails were re-rolled railroad track

i don't know what the "hobbs of hell" are but bed rails fit the analogy. they are "harder than. . . . ."
