Taycat, keep encouraging that child. He will soon appreciate the ability to picture and produce some (any) thing. I've always called what he made a drift, (part of the word draw/draft, to draw two holes into alignment.)

i will. he as spent 2 hrs filing offcuts of metal so he can learn to it properly.

Huh, they aren't indexable type, I see now thanks

I'm confused, why would they NOT be indexable? Looks like the dovetail plunger draws the holder into register, and there's a height adjustment for repeat. What's missing (other than my brain, perhaps)?

The tool holders are interchangeable, I'm not sure that qualifies them as indexible....maybe it does.

Take a look at the dorian and aloris indexable tool posts and you see what I mean, they are cut just like your holders are, but for a different purpose of being able to load 4 tools on the post. Friend of mine has the dorian version on his prototrak 1630sx, they are about 2 grand just for the tool post lol
Show a pic of the boy at the lathe, it's cool to see the young ones interested in the trade, here's a picture of my 14mo old daughter, she loves dad's machines :) sorry for the sideways picture but my laptop is still broken, screen will be here this week

The real indexable post holds four holders and has I believe 24 detents for superb repeatability

if you look at boys first machine project few pics there of him making hammer.

Your daughter is cute, keep her involved, too.

I found this,

"to rotate (work) on a milling machine in order to repeat the milling operation at a new position."

I guess a four post tool holder could also be indexable, the one I made has four positions that can be repeated, though, not 28.

So, yes, that tool post is indexable if it can be rotated and returned to the same position.

The indexing implies that it has exact positions that can be repeated, or in the sake of your 4 tool holder rotated to use different tools. However the single holder that he has is not indexable, nor is the standard aloris holder although it does hold 2 at a time, it's still not considered indexable

I trammed in the head of my new mill. It was way off as received from the PO. This was way easier to do than it was on my small square column mill. Both the tilt and nod have a screw that makes fine adjustment easy. I also finished mounting a rack on the splash tray on the lathe for holding the QCTP holders. I made one similar to ones I saw on the web using a unistrut and sections of aluminum angle. Just trying to get a little organized in the shop. Next on the list is a holder for the live centers and chuck on the lathe. I also have to redesign some brackets on the mill that mount the DRO display and VFD remote display. The ones the PO made are serviceable but very ugly. I can do better and I will.
