This morning I mounted a clear acrylic shield over the Y-axis DRO scale on my mini mill, to keep swarf off the scale. I also replaced the cutoff valve on my old Craftsman air compressor. It still has a slow leak elsewhere but I can live with it for now.

Tonight I reinforced the front legs of the bench on which the mill and my drill press sit. The bench wasn't as stiff as I wanted it so I added additional sections of 2x4, secured with Titebond III wood glue and drywall screws. Big difference. I'm thinking about adding some front-to-back bracing, because the drill press will be coming off this week and a Big Dog Metalworks 7x12 lathe will be taking its place.

Shawn, those speed cranks for a vise sure are nice to have. I had one for the 4" vises, but the big 7 1/2" on the Victoria was still lacking. You gave me the push I needed to throw this together yesterday.

The 1" square tubing was as good a fit on the shaft as the massive handle that the previous owner had welded up (Sitting on top of the vise). Just needed to turn a suitable adapter and weld it on. (Yeah, I know. Rough welds. Haven't done any for a while.) I picked up the old crank at the scrappers last year. Sure moves a 4 TPI vise fast.

OK, ok, ok, here's pics of of the covers I made for both the X- and Y-axes.

No pics of the workbench reinforcement, it's just boring rough carpentry. :)

I did my first internal threading on the lathe to a shoulder today. After reading a bunch on here (thanks to the group for the help) I took the plunge and gave it a go. The threads are 16 tpi at 2.0625". These are cut in Al. The next set will be cut in bronze.

Here is the inner size cut with the shoulder. I put the layout fluid on so I could see the threads better.

Here is first pass. How do you like my HSS ground threading tool? LOL I could not get my boring bar set so it didn't hit the shoulder.

Here is it finished. Quick run with a parting tool and its done.
