I don't have a picture but years ago I had to machine some foam rubber sleeves. I made an arbor that the sleeves would slide on to with a flat washer and nut on each end. The arbor was chucked on one end and a center in the free end.

I installed the sleeves, brought the nuts up snug and soaked the whole gizmo in water, prior to putting in the freezer. Once frozen, the arbor was set in the lathe and a turning cut with a very sharp carbide insert was made. It took several trips through the water, freezer and lathe, but in the end, the foam sleeves were the correct diameter.

clever, never would have thought about turning frozen foam

First thing I said after I finished the job above was " next time I will freeze this material". Good call. That stuff moves all over the place if not

Tom Lipton from Oxtools recently did a video where he taped the part he was machining to a faceplate. http://youtu.be/xI1yggBwUIo

I just bought a roll of the permacell tape from amazon to see how it works for myself. (Maybe I'll post a video once it arrives). One of the amazon reviewers of the tape actually uses the stuff to tape odd shaped parts to his mill table for machining?

Chris

Not the best picture, but this exhaust manifold was bolted to the front edge of the mill table.

I use double stick carpet tape for that purpose quit a bit, and if I really want it to stick, I use Gorilla brand double stick tape. I don't know how they make it that sticky.

I had to surface grind to size, some small brass plugs , size- .250dx .120 long, over the weekend. They needed to be within .001", but were over by .002". I super glued them to a parallel, then chucked the parallel to the magnetic Chuck. It worked out well. I soaked the parallel in acetone afterwards to free the parts.

Holding a head. It's kinda cheating being it's made for it, but if you dont know, now you do

Heres one from today. I could only get about 1/2 the apron in the vise. So I used a V block and a scrap alum to support the end and a v block and stepper on the vise. It worked so what can I say
