Lathe - Barber Shop Pole Pattern, Loose Carraige?

Don't guess, get back out the the shop and get out the indicator. Something is up! :)

The first lathe I got up and running just would never cut. I got another lathe :D :D :D

Check headstock/bed bolts

Camlock connection

Make sure jaw caps are tight and not bell mouthed

Gibs tight and ways oiled

With the belts/spindle drive disengaged, do you feel any knocking or roughness when you turn the spindle by hand?

Already check spindle end play, .001 and tightened the bearings to remove. Chuck is a brand new PBA 8" monster. With the belts/spindle drive disengaged its smooth as silk.

I'm with the leadscrew idea, mines bad and makes weird patterns too

Did you try turning between centers? Tightening the tailstock will eliminate and endplay as a test.
Did you try a different chuck? An out of balance chuck can cause strange patterns. Just my 2 cents. bob

Have you tried hand feeding? Remove the leadscrew (or power feed screw, if they are not both built into one) from the equation. Disengage the drivetrain if you can when hand feeding.
