Large Grinder

If I had any room left in the shop that would be here already, that is just down the road from me.

McMaster has aluminum oxide wheels for $104 each...

I wonder if it is 220v or 440v... the ad just says 3 phase...

Yup... I want it, but there is no way I could go get it... I'd have to take out a loan for the gas...

For 300 bucks - buy first, ask questions later!

You don't go get IT, find a few more things to make trip worthwhile.
Mine is unknown brand, appears similar to Cinncinnati-patterned motor. The base is 1.5" thick, 36" x 36", so total weight pushes 1300. Not including brake shoe, tow hitch, or box of radiator hoses. This pose captured day of purchase, a heavy truck repair shop in CA. 3ph, 240v-440v, not less than 3hp. The shrouds and shaft can accommodate 3" x 14" wheels. It does have better and proper tool rests.

That Hammond, hmm. 2 weeks ago it would have followed me home, was farther yet east.

I have one sitting in the shop that is very similar, will have to look at the manufacturer. It's just waiting for me to clean it up, and paint. The wheels look brand new, and I would imagine they alone are more than $300 each. It does take forever, for it to run down, and so smooth. I work on enough large items, that I'm sure it will get used, and it does have that high cool factor that we all love. Mike

Beautiful machine.
I have kind of developed a jones for big grinders.
I bid on this one last week.

I recognized it as a United States Electrical Tool Co machine. 12" big sister to my 10" one.
I went a bit too high for me - not knowing if it ran and not really needing it..
I had to replace the wheels on mine.
For a couple of months I looked all over - ebay, searchtempest, etc for some used or cheaper ones but found none. Finally ordered them from Norton. IIRC about $185 with shipping for the pair.
I rehabbed mine. It ran nice but was on a crummy, half fast pedistal and needed some TLC.
I remounted it on a Ford tractor axle housing.
This thing is SO quiet you have to look close at it to tell it is running.
I do have the other tool holder for it. Just didn't have it on in the photo.

Thanks for the likes.
Here's a little more about the rehab I did:
Aside from the crude pedistal it was on, the worst thing about it when I bought it was one of the wheel cups was broken.
I took a piece of 3/16" steel plate, heated it with the rosebud and used a trailer ball as a sort of anvil to form the cup. Did a bit of mig welding to form the lip, a little brazing to join the steel to the cast iron and then some grinding and sanding and while my fix is "not exactly" it is close enough that you don't notice it unless you look pretty close. It was a fun little project.
