Index mill, possibly a 40

Wow, original invoice!

Wrap your mind around this:

$1257 in Jun 1946 has the same buying power as $19,950.47 in Dec 2022.

That's capital equipment!

I think that 1257 is the gross pounds.

Boring out that stuck tool from the spindle is slow going.

The telescopic taper attachment was easy enough to use.

Lots of deflection with a smaller diameter boring bar over 4 inches, so I shortened distance to 3” to get as much as I can out from the larger diameter end. Once the material was thin enough, I used an awl to bend it inwards, collapsing it and breaking it free from the spindle.

What a fun project. Keep posting please.

crikey! Personally I'd buy a big azz forge and melt that remnant of a collet down to make sure it is unable to cause anymore anguish ever again.

Free at last. Bored that last inch out right up to the threads.

Screwed in the drawbar and tried to “tap” it out with a hammer. No dice. Back on the press. At first, nothing… then after a few minutes with constant pressure still applied: “Crack !!!!!!!!!! All the pieces fell down to the cushion I had placed below. I thought either the drawbar or something else had broken. It finally broke free.

I was expecting lots of rust to explain why it was stuck but nope, just some previous owner cranking down on the drawbar.

Getting ready to reassemble the spindle with new bearings.

For the bottom two angular contact bearings, I plan to put them in the back to back (DB) configuration.

Just wondering if it should be something different (face to face, or tandem).

holy cow. I guess they ain't kidding when they say BS and MT are self-locking tapers!

I would place the bearings face to face as in a thrust situation. They still work as radials.
