Old thread but I will add another vote for Evaporust. In addition to the above comments, another major plus is that it does not attach any chrome or nickel plating.
Folks love pictures so this is a before picture of a Sargent 408 (equivalent to a Stanley-Bailey No 3) hand plane. I have restored worse, but this does look to be in bad shape.
The greenish coloured parts are plated.
I used Evaporust on all the metal components. I was very happy the plated components came out looking like new. I was able to salvage the front knob, sanded and refinished. I had to replace the tote too soft and holes too sloppy. A nice walnut replacement.
