Would this bandsaw cut steel?

Good grief, I am so lost on this whole speed reduction jargon. Anyone able to tell me what I need to get/do, in layman's terms?

Start with looking up the desired blade speed.

Then plug in your motors speed, the band saw wheel size, and the pulley sizes. The play with the numbers to end up with the sped you want. Or hopefully someone has a calculator that would work better.

Here is a speed chart for band saw metal cutting. Assumes a bi-metal blade. Wood is normally cut at > 1000 FPM. I tend to cut plastics much slower to prevent melting, depends on the specific material. Blade pitch is dependant on the material thickness, but as a general rule you want at least 3 teeth contacting the material. For general use I use a 10/14 variable pitch blade.

If you look on my build thread (link posted above) I have an Excel spreadsheet that calculates the motor, gear reducer, pulley and drive wheel rpms in various combinations, it also shows the blade speed in feet per minute. PM me if you want a copy of the Excel file so you can plug in your own numbers, or if you don't have Excel, shoot me the combinations you are thinking of using and I'll generate the spreadsheet for you.
