Wood lathe thoughts

so based off the photo its an old one that needs a ton of work with the rust it has

Make sure you get all the attachments and their parts, but for one bill it's a no-brainer.

so just an update the person that posted the shopsmith V is not replying to anyone (asked a few people to try and message them) so not getting it
so will be keeping my eye open for the next lathe thing that is up for a reasonable price

Must have figured out it was worth whole lot more then they were asking.

so I guess here is a little update, the used market aint going to well anything thats in range of me within reason is either way to costly or looks like its one light kick away from being a pile of rust scraps, so I was wondering what are the thoughts on those $250ish dollar clone units that come with a 1/4 to 1/2 horse power motors? or would grabbing one of those old vintage pully lathes and just slapping a motor on it a few have shown up on ebay for a reasonable price tho shipping is like $60+

Unlike a metal lathe, a wood lathe will look pretty cheap. Depending on the size and the wood you’d be working with a harbor fright might do the trick. Otherwise check with local schools. They may be looking to upgrade and would sell the old one for cheap.

I found an eBay auction of a Powermatic wood lathe, a model 45. Old model, but it has all the stuff I wanted. I ”won” it for $165 and close enough to pickup. When I got there, there were actually three to choose from, but there were no tools, tool rests, faceplates, etc. Another buyer, who purchased the other lathes backed out when he saw no accessories, so I bought the other two lathes from him about $550 for all three. He left. Then we discovered several boxes of tooling, many faceplates, a Nova Chuck, etc. I made two solid lathes out of three, sold one to make a profit, added a VFD to the keeper and have been happy since.

Didn't see anything within reasonable driving distance. Have you looked at the Harbor Freight lathes? As usual, their information sucks. They show an MT2 headstock taper. Nothing about what size the headstock spindle size/thread is. Nothing about what size/taper the tailstock is. You want a standard size tailstock to take a drill chuck and a standard size headstock spindle to fit a name brand chuck.
Also have you checked Facebook market place? Seems to be more sold there then Craigslist.

Just did a search of 100 miles, Facebook has more then Ebay and Craigslist

I have looked into the harbor freight lathes and they seem way costly for being clone units (normally clone items are all close to the same price)
like right now I can get a shop fox W1704 1/3-horsepower benchtop lathe with chuck ($308 thats with tax and shipping) for cheaper then I can get
the harbor freight lathe thats a bit longer a bed ($430 with tax and shipping, local stores dont have it on hand, and is charging shipping even to send it to a store for pickup)

I dont use facebooks stuff do to their tracking, just getting on there once will let them snoop on what your doing for months selling off that info

should I just grab that little shop fox?
